UNDERAGE VOTING/ MONICA GUERRA

WHY IS IT THAT 16 YEAR OLDS HAVE TO PAY TAXES AND CAN BE SENTENCED TO THE life in prison, BUT YET THEY CAN’T VOTE?

A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD IS MATURE ENOUGH TO BE TRIED AND CONSIDERED AN ADULT IN COURT, BUT NOT MATURE ENOUGH TO VOTE OR CHOOSE WHERE THEIR TAX MONEY GOES TO. WE HAVE NO SAY WHEN GOVERNORS TAKE OUT BILLIONS IN EDUCATION, ONE OF OUR BIGGEST IMPACTS. ACCCORDING TO WWW.YOUTHRIGHTS.ORG .TEENS PAY AN ESTIMATED $9.7 BILLION DOLLARS IN SALES TAXES ALONE AND ATLEAST 80% OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WORK AT SOME POINT BEFORE GRADUATION.AFTER SOME MORE RESEARCH I FOUND OUT THAT IN 1971, THE VOTING AGE WAS CHANGED FROM 21 TO 18. WHY? IN THE SIXTIES WHEN THE COUNTRY WENT INTO WAR WITH VIETNAM A VERY LARGE GROUP IN THE AGE RANGE OF 18-21, COLLEGE STUDENTS AND OTHERS WERE PROTESTING AND WRITING LETTERS WITH GRIEVANCES TO THE GOVERNMENT. THEY WERE ANGRY AT THE FACT THAT 18-YEAR-OLDS WERE BEING SENT TO THE WAR BUT COULD NOT VOTE TILL THEY WERE 21. ALSO, I FOUND OUT THAT IN MARCH OF 2004, FORMER CALIFORNIA STATE SENATOR JOHN VASCONCELLOS ATTEMPTED TO PASS SOMETHING CALLED “SCA 19” WHICH WOULD ALLOW 14- AND 15-YEAR-OLDS WITH A 1/4 VOTE AND 16- AND 17-YEAR-OLDS WITH A 1/2 VOTE. IT WAS LATER ABANDONED BY THE SENATOR BECAUSE HE COULDN’T GET ENOUGH VOTES TO PASS A THIRD COMMITTEE, TO MOVE IT ON TO THE SENATE FLOOR. EVEN THOUGH MY AGE HOLDS ME BACK FROM VOTING, IT DOESN’T STOP ME FROM BEING AN ACTIVE SUPPORTER. I CONTRIBUTE TO OBAMA’S CAMPAIGN BY MAKING PHONE CALLS AND DONATIONS. AFTER READING ABOUT HIS BACKGROUND AND WATCHED HIS SPEECHES, I WAS SUCKED INTO THE OBAMA-MANIA.

FOR YOUTH RADIO, I’M MONICA GUERRA. YOU CAN HEAR THIS COMMENTARY AND MORE AT WWW.YOUTHRADIO.ORG
