Claiming your “Turf” Too Much

By: Tiara Lindsey

Commentary

Last week I was shopping with a couple of associates at a local mall. As we were about to check out, I looked in my friend’s direction. She had a frazzled and upset look on her face. I asked her what was the problem and she replied with sass: “I’m hella mad because she chargin’ me 5 extra dollars for these!! I’m from East Oakland we don’t play that.” As she said this she held a pack of multi-colored shoelaces and thought that it would be fair that she didn’t pay the extra 5 dollars because of where she was from. I still don’t understand why she had to add that last line. It’s annoying to hear “im from East Oakland…” and all that blaze-blah after everything that may or may not be fair. It’s totally understandable to be proud of where you’re from, but this is a whole new level of pride. Most people feel that their turf or their neighborhood, defines who they are because that’s all they know. I think it’s played out, and people are capable of acting a bit more maturely.

Having a Single Parent

BY:ESTEBAN OLAGUE

COMMENTARY

ACCORDING TO ABOUT.COM, 84% OF CUSTODIAL PARENTS ARE MOTHERS, AND OUT OF THAT PERCENTAGE, 44% ARE EITHER CURRENTLY DIVORCED OR SEPARATED. SEEING THIS MADE ME THINK ABOUT WHEN I WAS ADDED TO THE LIST OF PEOPLE WHOSE PARENTS ARE DIVORCED. BEING THE OLDEST AND ONLY MALE CHILD OF A SINGLE PARENT MOTHER HAS BOTH ITS UPS AND DOWNS. ONE OF THOSE BENEFITS IS THAT NOW MY SISTER HAS TO LISTEN TO ME, AND THAT MY MOM CONSULTS ME ON MOST OF THE MAJOR SPENDING. THE NEGATIVES CONSIST OF FEELING LIKE EVERYTHING IS ON MY SHOULDERS. LIVING DAY TO DAY ON BASICALLY LEFTOVER CHANGE HAS BECOME A DAILY ROUTINE. I REMEMBER DAYS WHEN MY DAD’S CHILD SUPPORT MONEY WOULDN’T COME WHILE MY MOM, SISTER AND I WERE RUNNING OUT OF FOOD TO EAT. I REMEMBER PRAYING FOR THAT CHECK TO COME, BUT DOING IT AT NIGHT SO MY MOM AND SISTER WOULDN’T SEE ME. IF MY MOM AND LITTLE SISTER EVER SAW ME CRY, PRAY, OR EVEN DOUBT OUR SITUATION THEY MAY HAVE LOST HOPE AND THOUGHT WE WOULD NEVER GET ON OUR FEET FINANCIALLY AGAIN. THIS IS AN UNNECESSARY BURDEN THAT I PUT ON MYSELF TO FILL IN FOR MY FATHER. WHEN I TOLD MY MOTHER SHE REPLIED, “YOU’RE JUST HIS SON, THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO BE LIKE HIM”, AND SHE WAS RIGHT. THIS RESPONSIBILITY ISN’T MEANT FOR SOMEONE MY AGE. IF I REALLY WANT TO HELP MY FAMILY, I NEED TO GO TO SCHOOL, AND GET EDUCATED. WHEN THE BENEFITS OF ALL MY HARD WORK START PAYING OFF, THEN I CAN SPREAD THE WEALTH AMONGST THE PEOPLE I FEEL NEED IT THE MOST. ONLY AFTER REACHING OUR FULL POTENTIAL IS WHEN WE CAN REALLY HELP OTHERS.

FEWER TREES MEANS MORE PROBLEMS

BY: NATHANIEL LASHLEY

NEWS

WHY ARE THE TREES DYING SO FAST? ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, FORESTS IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES ARE DYING AT A FASTER RATE. THERE ARE MANY PROBABLE CAUSES: GLOBAL WARMING, LARGE TREES FALLING ON SMALLER ONES, OVERCROWDING OF YOUNG TREES, AIR POLLUTION, A LACK OF HEALTHY FOREST FIRES, OR THE EFFECTS OF LOGGING. THIS IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE IT DESTROYS THE LOCAL ECO SYSTEM, WHICH KILLS OTHER WILDLIFE. THIS MAKES WILD FIRES MORE UNCONTROLLABLE AND THEY BURN MORE THAN THEY SHOULD. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US; TREES TAKE IN CARBON DIOXIDE AND MAKE OXYGEN. SO IF THE TREES WERE TO DIE OFF WE WOULDN’T HAVE AS MUCH OXYGEN, THE SOIL WOULD ERODE EASILY. WE WOULD HAVE LESS FRUITS AND NO FIREWOOD, AND IT WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO GLOBAL WARMING. IF THE TREES WERE TO DIE IT WOULD BE TROUBLE FOR US AND THE REST OF THE WORLD. IF THE TREES DIED WE WOULDN’T HAVE OUR BEAUTIFUL FOREST AND THE ANIMALS THAT LIVE WITHIN THEM. THNGS THAT WOULD HELP THE TREES ARE: NOT LITTERING, TURNING OFF LIGHTS WHEN WE ARE NOT USING THEM, DRIVING LESS, AND JOINING AN ECOLOGICAL SOCIETY.

Fitted for the Ladies

BY: JAYVON CALHOUN

COMMENTARY

THE WAY A PERSON DRESSES REFLECTS THEIR PERSONAL STYLE AND IS THE FIRST IMPRESSION OF HOW THE WORLD OBSERVES YOU. FASHION IS A WAY OF LIFE, IT IS MY LIFE. FASHION SHOWS A PERSON’S STYLE, PERSONALITY, SWAGGER AND MANY MORE QUALITIES. ALL OF THESE QUALITIES MEANS A LOT TO PEOPLE AT MY SCHOOL; IT’S A BIG COMPETITION ESPECIALLY AMONGST THE GUYS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO LOOK GOOD FOR THE GIRLS. IT IS AN UNSPOKEN COMPETITION BECAUSE THEY FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE TO LOOK THE BEST IN ORDER TO GET THE MOST ATTENTION. WHEN I’M AT SCHOOL I’M NOT GOING TO LIE I LIKE THE ATTENTION BUT IM NOT CONCIETED. IT’S JUST THAT I WANT THE GIRLS TO SEE THAT I TAKE PRIDE IN HOW I LOOK. AND YOU NEVER KNOW I CAN COME TO SCHOOL WEARING SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT BECAUSE I USE FASHION AS A WAY TO BE CREATIVE. I WANT THE GIRLS TO LOOK AT ME AND SAY “WOW” HE’S FRESH. IF SOMEONE WAS TO COME TO SCHOOL LOOKING FRESHER THAN ME I WOULD GO HOME GET MY BEST OUTFIT AND COME BACK LOOKING BETTER THAN BEFORE. I FEEL THAT I SHOULD LOOK AND BE THE BEST DRESSER EVER, BUT THAT’S JUST ME AND I’VE BEEN LIKE THIS SINCE THE THIRD GRADE. FASHION IS MY NATURE IT’S WHAT KEEPS ME PUSHING. WHEN SOMETHING GETS ME DOWN OR UPSET I TAKE A LOOK AT MYSELF AND LAUGH IT OFF AND LEAVE WHAT HAD ME MAD IN THE PAST. EVEN THOUGH IT BRINGS UP MY SELF CONFIDENCE, FASHION AIN’T EVERYTHING. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE’S MORE TO ME THEN JUST FASHION.FOR YOUTH RADIO, I AM JAYVON CALHOUN.YOU CAN HEAR MORE OF THIS COMMENTARY AT YOUTHRADIO.ORG

VOLUPTUOUS IS THE WORD

COMMENTARY

BY: Sarah Hamik

The moment a woman with low self-confidence catches a glance at herself the first thought is “I wish I could change…” Others that follow lead to “I shouldn’t have eaten that extra piece of toast this morning” or “I have to remember to throw up after lunch today” oR OF COURSE, “I gained a pound from the croutons on that salad yesterday.” Ladies, croutons? Honestly. The women living in a world full of size B-cup boobs, or wearing a size one pair of jeans simply puts toO much pressure on how they look at themselves. tOO OFTEN I’VE seeN ads of skinny womEn that don’t have any meat on them and think, “Is this how I’m supposed to look?” I have watched one toO many times how hating yourself leads to killing yourself. Girls use excuses like, “I already ate dinner mom,” and the parents believe them. Even when the girls’ faceS look shrunken and their bones pop out in all the wrong places. A friend of mine got hit with both anorexia and bulimia at the same time. I saw the pounds that made her look beautiful turn into skin that seemed too tight in some places and too lose in others. Before I knew what was happening, I found myself passing up meals finding the pounds leave my stomach and my thighs. I loved how I could look in the mirror without turning away. My size ten jeans went to a size nine than eight until I’d started to feel tired more and sleep longer. I’ll never forget the day my friend and I met for lunch and we just stared at each other while it set in what we were doing to ourselves. I hadn’t eaten that much AT lunch time for months at that point. After I felt sick with food and ran to the bathroom and within ten minutes was flushing it all down the toilet. That was the day I was ashamed to look at myself. After I started eating regular again, the pounds added on. But now, even though it was hard at first, I’m slowly starting to accept myself. Now I get complements from people I’ve never met on my clothes and how great my legs look in a skirt. I walk with more and more confidence every day. You have to learn to love yourself because sometimes you’re all you’ve got. Voluptuous is the word. So work those double D cups and show off that size twelve butt.
