MVP NBA 08-09

The NBA most valuable player candidates are Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Dwayne wade. I think Lebron James aka “the king” should be MVP.He averages 28.3 points, 9 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. Kobe Bryant averages 28 points per game, he also brings his team from the bottom to the top in most game, with the Lakers having the best record in the league. Chris Paul aka “cp3”, averages 21.4 points and 2.8 steals pre game. And Dwight Howard aka “d12”, also with an average of 21 points, and 2.9 blocks per game. And finally Dwayne wade who averages 29.7 points per game. My pick is Lebron James because he is unpredictable and very entertaining . He is a team player, and has a great personality, he loves where he’s at and keeps everyone on their toes. He is a nice guy and a player that a coach would want to work with .he is the future of the NBA.

Rising of Rose

Commentary

Up in coming rookie of the year

Up in coming rookie of the year

Derrick rose was the number one pick in the 2009 NBA draft. The point guard out of the University of Memphis was selected by the Chicago bulls. He is my pick for rookie of the year. The Chicago native is playing in his hometown but he seems to be dealing with the pressure well. He was the nation’s top high school point guard in 2007. He was Illinois Mr. Basketball in 2007. He is the skills challenge champion at the 2009 NBA all-star weekend beating Devin Harris, mo Williams, and tony parker. He is averaging 16 points per game. In his first week he pulled a Michael Jordan and scored 26 points. Derrick rose has come to the NBA and let all the other rookies know that he is going to be on top out of the gate. He is averaging 3.6 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. He is a person that can keep his game face on until he leaves the court so it looks to reporters and photographers like he is not happy when he is, he is someone that can show his feelings when he gets comfortable where he is. Derrick rose is a man that you can depend on if your starting point guard is out. He fights as hard as he can to help not only himself look good and his team as well. He can be very laid back and show no emotions. Derrick rose is my favorite rookie and espn.sports.go.com will back me on saying that not only is he a great basketball player but he is also very intelligent. Also he does not struggle with his perimeter shots and he has not suffered any injuries. Im not saying that he is a superhero and can’t mess up or get hurt, I’m saying at this moment nothing is going bad for him. He needs to work on his defense more and when he does he will be one of the greatest that has ever played.

No Wrestling Team In My High School

Head Dip

Head Dip

By Fernando Bustos

Commentary

I am passionate about wrestling. I remember watching it on TV and on the Olympics. By seeing these athletes toss and grapple each other I developed an interest in the sport. Since then I have started to wrestle with my brothers and then gotten yelled at by my mom for making too much noise in the house. I have always liked sports with physical contact I like using my body as a way to perform moves that seem impossible to do. It’s the rush and contact you get that gets me pumped up and ready to wrestle. I started out with wrestling in the 8th grade. When I came to high school I was so excited about getting onto the wrestling team, since I heard competition is more serious there and people are more committed to becoming better. I knew that that’s the place I wanted to be so that I could grow and become a better wrestler. Unfortunately when I talked to the director of athletics at our school I found out that we didn’t have a wrestling team, and we haven’t had one in a long time. I was disappointed that there was no team because I was really pumped up to start a higher level of sports where I would become a better wrestler.

My high school has not taken any actions to bring back the wrestling team. I think it’s really important to have a bigger variety of sports in high school since its one of the reasons why students are in involved in school. There are many students who have a passion for sports and use high school sports to become better and develop skills in life.

All-American Returns

blake-griffin1

by Jacquez Clifton

According to www.rivals.com Oklahoma power forward Blake Griffin was cleared to play tomorrow at Texas Tech. The 6- foot-10 sophomore could not play because of a bad concussion during the first half of a loss to Texas last Saturday. He sat on the bench the rest of the game. The then third-ranked Sooners suffered a heart breaking 87-78 loss at home to Kansas. Blake Griffin is very important to his team. He is averaging 22 points and 13 rebounds per game. He ranks second nationally with 22 double – doubles. Griffin is the heart and soul of his team. In the Kansas game , the Sooners were outrebounded by six. He’s considered by many experts to be the number one pick in the 2009 draft. ESPN says that griffin has the size, strength, and athleticism coveted in power players. They compare him to Utah Jazz power forward Carlos Boozer.

News

By:Nathaniel Lashley

According to timesonline.com, eight people at the party where Michael Phelps was caught smoking marijuana were arrested on February third. Seven of them were arrested for possession of marijuana. The eighth person was arrested for dealing the drugs. One of them was reported to be the owner of the bong Phelps smoked from. He tried to sell the bong for $100,000 on eBay. Other people have tried to sell website addresses like “phelpsbongs.com” for $9,500. And people have been selling t-shirts saying “I did bong hits with Phelps”. Michael Phelps wasn’t charged in the case, but he has lost a big endorsement from Kellogg’s cereals. Pro-marijuana groups believe that the police should focus on the other people at the party, who actually broke the law. the marijuana policy project said Kellogg’s is being hypocritical because when Phelps was caught for drinking and driving they kept their endorsement even though he did something illegal and even more dangerous. Phelps wasn’t arrested for using the marijuana while the other seven were. Phelps should not be getting special privileges for being an Olympic medial winner and should be treated like everyone else.

Stereotypes in Basketball

BY: FANUEL ALEM

THERE ARE MANY STEREOTYPES IN THE NBA, FOR EXAMPLE AFRICAN AMERICANS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE MORE FLASHY AND AGGRESSIVE THAN OTHER RACES. SOCIETY HAS PUT THIS IDEA THAT AFRICAN AMERICANS ACHIEVEMENTS IN ACADEMICS IS LOWER THAN WHITE PEOPLE. THIS IS A COMPLETE STEREOTYPE AND GENERALIZATION AND NOW I’VE SEEN THAT AFRICAN AMERICANS ARE SEEN AS MORE ATHLETIC THAN WHITE PEOPLE. YOU CAN CONNECT IT BACK TO SLAVERY TIMES WHEN BLACK PEOPLE WERE USED FOR THEIR STRENGTH. IT PLAYS OUT IN TODAY’S SOCIETY WHEN WE HEAR THAT BLACK PEOPLE ARE ONLY TALENTED IN SPORTS THAN ACADEMIA. TO THIS DAY IT PLAYS OUT LIKE THAT AND YOU HEAR IT, BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY.THERE ARE SOME STEREOTYPES ABOUT OTHER ETHNICITIES LIKE HOW THEY HAVE MORE DISCIPLINE IN THE GAME AND HOW THEY’RE GOOD SHOOTERS BUT ARE LESS AGGRESSIVE. ALTHOUGH AFRICAN AMERICANS CAN DO ENTERTAINING AND FLASHY TRICKS WITH THE BALL IT STILL DOESN’T MAKE THEM BETTER BALL PLAYER’S. SOME TEAMS IN THE NBA HAVE TROUBLE WINNING GAMES BECAUSE OF THEIR FLASHY PLAYERS TRY TO TAKE THE GLORY AS OPPOSSED TO PLAYING AS A TEAM. AS A DEMANDING AUDIENCE MEMBER I PREFER WATCHING LEBRON JAMES AND ALLEN IVERSON BECAUSE THEIR PERFORMANCES ARE MORE APPEALING TO ME. I’M BLACK AND AS A BASKETBALL PLAYER IT DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN I HAVE TO BE A FLASHY ALL-STAR PLAYER TO BE KNOWN. IN MY BASKETBALL PRACTICES, I’VE NOTICED THE PLAYERS WHO GET THE MOST RECOGNITION FOR THEIR GAME ARE THE ONES WHO PLAY TEAM BALL, THIS MINDSET IS SOMETHING THAT SOME NBA TEAMS ARE LACKING AND PREVENTING THEM FROM WINNING GAMES. WE COULD TALK ABOUT CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS LIKE THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS OR THE BOSTON CELTICS AS OPPOSED TO THE 05-06 LAKERS WHEN KOBE HAD 81 POINTS BUT COULDN’T EVEN GET HIS TEAM PAST THE 1 ROUND OF THE PLAY-OFFS. WHAT I’M TRYING TO SAY IS THAT EVEN THOUGH THOSE TYPES OF PERFORMANCES ARE FUN TO WATCH, IT’S NOT THE BEST WAY TO WIN GAMES.

Decline and Fall by Jacob Cohn

I’ve never really played baseball, but I’ve always been a fan. I inherited my baseball allegiances from my Mets-fan father and from my surroundings. I grew up in the two-team city of New York, which I’ve always thought has some of the most passionate fans in baseball. Except for an easily-ignored minority, if you were a baseball fan, you supported the Mets or the Yankees. In this eternal war there was no middle ground. I chose my side and defended it, and I still remain faithful even after I moved here to the bay area eight years ago. Like a lot of other Mets fans, my hopes for 2007 were high. The previous season they had come within one game of reaching the World Series, and in my mind there didn’t seem to be any reason for them not to repeat their performance. and in early September I seemed to be right—the Mets had a seven-game lead in their division. no way they can mess that up, I thought, as did many other people. boy was i wrong. in only seventeen games the Mets blew that lead and ruined their playoff hopes in one of the worst collapses in history, beating out 500-1 odds. Watching it—or listening—was painful. They have to win this one, I thought, day after day, and day after day they failed to do so. I still don’t understand how they managed to do this. The manager and owners hadn’t made any stupid decisions recently. Maybe they just lost their momentum, lost one game and then just kept on losing. It can happen. But I don’t think I’ll ever understand how one team could have magically transformed itself into such a laughingstock in the blink of an eye. Despite this catastrophe, I will continue to keep the faith. After all, there’s always next year.
