Could have been DD45
According to boston.com a 115 feet wide asteroid flashes by earth in a cosmic close call, at 8:40 am ET. On March 2, 2009 an asteroid called dd45 passed earth by 45,000 miles not too far from satellites that orbit the earth and about one-fifth of the distance between the moon and earth, NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory reported. The asteroid was noticed on February 28th only two days before the asteroid passed by earth. It passed over the Pacific Ocean near Tahiti at its closest point. The asteroid was spotted by Australians astronomers when the asteroid was one million miles away from earth. Astronomers say they didn’t see it coming until Saturday. Once they found it, they determined there was no risk of a collision. It buzzed by earth at 8:40 a.m. ET. If the asteroid did hit it would cause a 500ft tall tsunami wave destroying a populated area. Asteroids of this size would unleash a destructive power to about 10 to 15 megaton’s of TNT. Dr Crowther explained this is about 1,000 times more powerful than the blast from the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The next known asteroid will come in such close proximity to earth is in 2029. An asteroid known as 99942 Apophis, an 885-square-foot space rock, is expected to come within 20,000 miles of the planet. Having not heard of this at the time made me upset. But I understood why it was not publicized so much. If I were to say that the end of the world is in the next 30 minutes most people would react recklessly to all their emotions and would cause chaos on earth. So if this happens again I would prefer to be told but in a calm manner so that I would not react to my first reactions.

Today at youth radio we, the winter core class, were introduced to Cynthia Maxwell who works at Apple to create applications and specializes in sound development. During the presentation she mentioned that with every sound there’s a specific equation to make that tone. I’m only in the 11th grade and my favorite subject is math, but when she showed me what that equation looked like, I didn’t have a clue about what it meant. Luckily I was interested enough to ask if she could break it down and explain it to me after her presentation had ended. Another thing that she mentioned in the presentation was that she used to work for NASA, and for anyone that’s a pretty huge accomplishment. She inspired me to apply for mathematics in college, something I’d never even thought I would ever consider.

Cynthia Maxwell’s job is very interesting. At first I had no clue what she was talking about or what her work was about. As she started to explain more in detail about what exactly she does it made sense. It was weird and new but it was cool. Creating a software to make new sounds based on new shapes and what you can do with these shapes is out of this world. I was amazed when she took out her Iphone and started making sounds based on how she physically moved the phone. I highly respect her work and it’s something I will be looking more into.

ACCORDING TO BBC NEWS RESEARCHERS FOUND THAT LOW SELF ESTEEM SHRINKS THE BRAIN. AND PEOPLE WITH LOW SELF WORTH ARE LIKELIER TO SUFFER FROM MEMORY LOSS AS THEY GET OLDER. DR. SONIA LUPIEN OF Mc GILLL UNIVERSITY DID A SURVEY ON 92 SENIOR CITIZENS OVER THE COURSE OF 15 YEARS SHE STUDIED THEIR BRAIN SCANS SHE FOUND THAT THE BRAINS OF THE PEOPLE WITH SELF ESTEEM ISSUES WERE A FIFTH SMALLER THAN THOSE WHO DIDN’T EXPERIENCE SELF ESTEEM ISSUES. THESE PEOPLE ALSO PERFORMED WORSE IN MEMORY AND LEARNING TESTS. DR. LUPIEN BELIEVES THAT THOSE WITH A NEGATIVE MIND SET WERE TAUGHT TO CHANGE THE WAY THEY THINK THEY COULD REVERSE THEIR MENTAL DECLINE. SO ACCORDING TO DR. LUPIEN THE FEAR OF MEMORY LOSS MAYBE CAUSED BY ANXIETY AND ANXIETY WILL LEAD TO MEMORY IMPAIRMENT.

BEING A MUSICIAN IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME. I FEEL LIKE IT’S MY CONNECTION TO EXPRESSING MYSELF CREATIVELY. WHEN GUITAR HERO FIRST CAME OUT, I THOUGHT IT WAS A TERRIBLE IDEA. FOR ONE THING, I COULDN’T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE WOULDN’T JUST LEARN TO PLAY A REAL GUITAR. HOW COULD IT POSSIBLY BE FUN TO FIT ALL THOSE CHORDS, NOTES, AND SCALES INTO 5 BUTTONS? BUT I ALSO HAD ANOTHER FEELING IN THE BACK OF MY MIND: WORRY. I WONDERED, SINCE THE GAME WAS GETTING SO POPULAR, HOW IT WOULD AFFECT THE FUTURE OF MUSIC? WHAT IF KIDS STOPPED WANTING TO PLAY GUITAR, AND INSTEAD WANTED TO BUY GUITAR HERO? BUT, I JUST LET IT GO. AFTER ALL, IT WAS JUST A GAME. THEN, ROCK BAND CAME OUT. THIS IS A GAME THAT NOT ONLY USES A FAKE GUITAR, BUT A FAKE DRUMSET AND A MICROPHONE. AGAIN, I WONDERED HOW ANYONE COULD EVER CHOOSE TO PLAY THE GAME INSTEAD OF INSTRUMENTS, AND AGAIN, I WORRIED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF NEW MUSIC, AND NEW MUSICIANS. I WAS COMPLETELY AGAINST PLAYING EITHER OF THESE GAMES, UNTIL MY FRIEND INVITED ME TO PLAY ROCK BAND WITH HER. I SAID OKAY. AFTER ALL, YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO “KNOW YOUR ENEMY”. AS SHE SCROLLED THROUGH THE SONG LIST, I REALIZED THERE WERE A LOT OF SONGS I ACTUALLY LIKED, AND IT GOT ME EXCITED TO TRY IT OUT. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING AT FIRST, BUT ONCE I GOT THE HANG OF IT, IT BECAME PRETTY FUN. EVENTUALLY I HAD TO LEAVE, BUT I WAS STILL HOOKED, AND ON MY BIRTHDAY, I GOT MY VERY OWN. IT TURNS OUT THAT PLAYING THE ROCK BAND DRUMS ON EXPERT CAN BE A GOOD TOOL FOR PRACTICING WHEN I COULDN’T PLAY THE REAL THING, AND TO THIS DAY, I STILL LOVE TO PLAY IT. I’M STILL ANNOYED BY THE GUITARS USED IN THE GAME. THERE ARE 120 PLACES TO PUT YOUR FINGERS ON A 6-STRING, 20 FRET GUITAR, BUT ONLY 5 BUTTONS ON A GUITAR CONTROLLER FOR BOTH OF THE GAMES. PEOPLE WILL WANT TO TAKE THE EASY WAY, BUT IT WON’T HELP ANYONE IN THE LONG RUN. AS THE GAMES GROW IN POPULARITY, LESS AND LESS KIDS WANT TO START A BAND, BUT MORE AND MORE WANT TO BUY ROCK BAND. EVENTUALLY, IT’S GONNA RESULT IN LESS “NATURAL MUSIC”, ESPECIALLY WITH THE LATEST INSTALLMENT OF GUITAR HERO. IN GUITAR HERO: WORLD TOUR, PLAYERS CAN CREATE THEIR OWN MUSIC WITHIN THE GAME USING PRESET LOOPS FOR DRUMS, GUITAR, AND BASS. IT’S GETTING SO ADVANCED THAT PEOPLE ARE GOING TO STOP NEEDING TO LEARN TO READ MUSIC, OR STUDY MUSIC THEORY, BECAUSE GAME LIKE GUITAR HERO AND ROCK BAND MAKE IT SO EASY. BUT, PLAYING INSTRUMENTS WON’T JUST HELP YOU IN MUSIC. IT’S BEEN PROVEN THAT TAKING MUSIC LESSONS STRENGTHENS THE NEURAL CHORDS THAT TRANSMIT INFORMATION BETWEEN THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES OF THE BRAIN, AND THEREFORE CAN HELP STUDENTS DO BETTER IN SCHOOL. FOR INSTANCE, IN 1993, JAPAN, HOLLAND, AND HUNGARY WERE THE TOP 3 COUNTRIES IN TERMS OF THEIR STUDENT’S SCIENCE ABILITIES. ONE OF THE BIG THINGS THEY HAD IN COMMON WERE THEIR MUSIC PROGRAMS: EACH COUNTRY TAUGHT MUSIC IN THE CURRICULUM FROM KINDERGARTEN TO 12TH GRADE. WHEN PARENTS HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN GETTING THEIR KID A GUITAR OR GUITAR HERO, THEY SHOULD LOOK AT ALL THE BENEFITS THAT PLAYING A REAL INSTRUMENT CAN GIVE. MAYBE NOTHING WILL CHANGE WITHIN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. MAYBE GAMES LIKE THIS WILL START TO FADE AWAY, AND MAYBE THEY’LL LOSE THE POPULARITY THEY HAVE NOW. NO ONE CAN KNOW FOR SURE WHAT WILL HAPPEN, BUT I KNOW THAT I WILL ALWAYS BE ON THE SIDE OF MAKING “NATURAL” MUSIC.

LAST WEEK, I PROBABLY GOT AROUND 4 OR 5 HOURS OF SLEEP A NIGHT, AND I DEFINITELY FELT THE EFFECTS OF NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP. FOR EXAMPLE, I AM NOT USUALLY THE ONE TO BE FALLING ASLEEP IN CLASS, BUT I ACTUALLY FOUND MYSELF DOZING OFF DURING A BORING LECTURE. I ALSO REALIZED THAT I WAS FALLING BEHIND IN A COUPLE CLASSES BECAUSE I COULDN ’ T PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS OR FOCUS ON THE TASK AT HAND. AND WHEN I GOT HOME, I WAS SO TIRED THAT I WOULDN ’ T HELP OUT WITH CHORES AROUND THE HOUSE. MY PARENTS HAVEN ’ T TAKEN NOTICE BECAUSE THEY ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH SLEEP. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE ALSO TALKED TO MY CLASSMATES AND THEY SAY THAT THEY GO THROUGH THIS EXACT SAME THING. THE REASON THAT I AM NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP IS BECAUSE OF SO MUCH WORK THAT I AM GETTING FROM SCHOOL, ESPECIALLY MY AP SPANISH CLASS. I ALWAYS END UP STAYING UP LATE TRYING TO FINISH MY SPANISH WORK, AND ON TOP OF THAT I HAVE HOMEWORK FOR FIVE OTHER CLASSES. I THINK THAT ANOTHER PART OF THIS PROBLEM IS THAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM REQUIRES US TO WAKE UP WAY TOO EARLY, ESPECIALLY FOR ME, SINCE I DON ’ T LIVE CLOSE TO MY SCHOOL. ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA, SLEEP DEPRIVATION CAN HAVE MANY SIDE EFFECTS, INCLUDING DIABETES, EFFECT ON
GROWTH, AND OBESITY. ALSO, A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED AND SAID THAT SCHOOL AGE STUDENTS SHOULD BE GETTING ABOUT EIGHT AND A HALF HOURS TO NINE HOURS OF SLEEP A NIGHT, AND THOSE WHO DO SLEEP THAT MUCH GET HIGHER GRADES. I KNOW THAT IT IS SOMETHING I MUST FIX, BUT IT WILL BE A DIFFICULT TASK FOR ME.

TECHNOLOGY TODAY HAS INFLUENCED OUR SOCIETY AND MOST OF OUR
YOUTH. IT HAS MADE LIFE EASIER IN A LOT OF WAYS. BUT I CAN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THAT LESS AND LESS CRITICAL THINKING IS HAPPENING. EVEN THOUGH TECHNOLOGY CAN BE EDUCATIONAL, IN MY OPINION I WISH THERE WAS LESS TECHONOLOGY.BECAUSE I WANT TO BE ABLE TO EXPERIMENT THINGS ON MY OWN. LIKE WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER TO SOMETHING YOU CAN JUST GO ON THE INTERNET AND GOOGLE IT AND IT WILL SHOW UP. OR IF YOUR TRYING TO GET SOMEWHERE AND YOU NEED A MAP, AND YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH TIME, AGAIN YOU CAN JUST MAP QUEST IT AND IT’LL BE THERE FOR YOU. NOW I FEEL THAT EVERYTHING I WANT TO DO IS THERE FOR ME AND I DON’T HAVE TO LOOK FOR IT. FOR EXAMPLE SOME PEOPLE HAVE THEIR MAIN HIGH-TECH PHONES THAT HAVE FEATURES SUCH AS CAMERAS, MUSIC, INTERNET, MYSPACE, AND FACEBOOK ETC. LIKE THE IPHONE IT HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED FROM A GREAT CAMERA TO INTERNET, TEXT MESSAGING, AIM, AND ITS EVEN USED AS AN IPOD. HOW BETTER CAN IT GET? INCLUDING MYSELF IM NOT GOING TO LIE I CAN’T LIVE WITH OUT MY CAMERA, PHONE OR IPOD. AND WHEN I DON’T HAVE THEM WITH ME I FEEL LIKE SOMETHING IS MISSING.

Global warming is a huge impact on this world! not only to our generation, but our FUTURE generationS to come, and let alone it is harming not only humans but animals. According to the U.S Geological Survey Office, in the next 50 years, we will see a loss of two thirds of the worlds Polar Bears population. Due to warming water, Also this effect of warming water is not only affecting Arctic animals but the toll of mother nature has been at it’s highest in the last years, all this warming water is not only making our hurrcaines stronger and weather worse, the tempetureS are getting higher and higher practiaclly everyday. so what has been the cause of all this? It is said that one of the highset causes of global warming is the burning of fossel fuels, nuclear power plants and it has been for the last 20 years. SO why can’T we just walk or ride a bike and instead of using power plants, why not use wind power or solar power? Do we really need there resources? the human races has lived millions of years, what did they do then, that we can’t do now? if We’ve evolved so much then why can’t we make these small sacrafices to save our only true home? it can be as easy as walking to school or work or not putting any hairspary on, to actually recycling paper, plastic and rubber. has the human race become so selfish? I don’t want to live in a world where animals are going exstinct and where the world’s countires may dissapear, haven’t we done enough damage? so let’s take responsiblity for our actions and repair our home, it is never toO late to go green and take action.
