MVP NBA 08-09

The NBA most valuable player candidates are Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Dwayne wade. I think Lebron James aka “the king” should be MVP.He averages 28.3 points, 9 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. Kobe Bryant averages 28 points per game, he also brings his team from the bottom to the top in most game, with the Lakers having the best record in the league. Chris Paul aka “cp3”, averages 21.4 points and 2.8 steals pre game. And Dwight Howard aka “d12”, also with an average of 21 points, and 2.9 blocks per game. And finally Dwayne wade who averages 29.7 points per game. My pick is Lebron James because he is unpredictable and very entertaining . He is a team player, and has a great personality, he loves where he’s at and keeps everyone on their toes. He is a nice guy and a player that a coach would want to work with .he is the future of the NBA.

13 -year old Britain father Alfie Patten has impregnated 15-year old girlfriend Chantelle Steadman. She gave birth to a 7lb 3oz- girl named Maisie Roxanne. Patten said that he did not know how people would react to his situation but he wanted to have this baby anyway. According to the sun news, Alfie Patten said, “When my mom found out, I thought I was going to get in trouble. We wanted to have the baby but were worried how people would react.” While he is in a tough situation, he is determined to take care of this baby. “I didn’t know what it would be like to be a dad. I will be good though and care for it.” Patten said. Alfie is showing this world that being a father doesn’t mean to get a girl pregnant, but also own up to the situation and do what is right. Chantelle Steadman said Alfie has been really good with their new born child “Alfie has been really good with her. He made the first bottle and then we took it in turns feeding her. He did the first bit with me. We didn’t need any help from mum.” She said.

Both the father and the mother are going to stay in school, to ensure that the family has a great future. While teenage pregnancy is a big issue in today’s society, Alfie and Chantelle are working towards making sure that their child had the  best future ever.

Teen Pregnancy

Round Table

By Sarah Hamik

It’s normal in our society to have sex at a young age. It’s more likely that teens will have sex when their intoxicated because it causes them to be attracted to the opposite sex. When you’re under the influence teens tend to want sex more than care about their safety. According to womenshealthchannel.com, approximately one-third of young women in the United States become pregnant during their teens. More than 80% of teen pregnancies are unintended and unintentional. I think that teens should be more responsible about having sex and should always be prepared for the outcome if they were not prepared. A lot of my friends are usually only half ready when having sex and end up asking me two weeks later to buy them a pregnancy test. A lot of times pregnant girls can look to the media for suggestions about alternatives for their pregnancy. They could put it up for adoption like in the movie, Juno, or they could keep the baby like they did on the TV show called “Secret life of an American Teenager”, or they could have an abortion like Kyra from the movie “Coach Carter”. Even though teens have all these choices, it still shouldn’t lead them to get pregnant unintentionally.

WHAT IS FAMILY?

By Esteban Olague

Commentary

What is the real definition of family? Is family a word that can be defined from the dictionary? Is that the real definition just because it’s in a dictionary? My definition of family is a group of people that you trust with your life, a group of people that have your back till the end and not the ones that just say, “Yea blood, I got yo back.” Most people that just say it don’t really mean it. Through out my life I’ve learned that people aren’t justified by their words or promises, and not by their ability to speak or what people think of them. People are only justified by their actions and defined by what they do in the worst situations. I have family that I don’t consider to be my bloodline; I refer to those people by their first names instead of calling them my uncle, auntie, or grandparent. My real family has always been there for me. I’m the only son with only one little sister, but I got 6 brothers and 2 other sisters, 2 dads, 2 moms, and only a few aunties and uncles. My 2nd pair of parents are my dad’s brother and his wife. My brothers and sisters mostly consist of people who started out as just my friends, but I believe that family doesn’t end by blood.

What Men Really Want

News

By Sarah Hamik

On February 16, 2009, National Geographic stated that Susan Fiske proved that men see women more as objects rather than humans. Fiske, a psychologist at Princeton University, did an experiment with 21 heterosexual men in Chicago. She took pictures of headless women, half were clothed the others were in bikinis. Most of the men remembered the women in the bikinis even only seeing them for a tenth of a second, Proving that men see women as sex objects rather than humans. Fiske also states that if the experiment were done with women they would not dehumanize men as men do to women. Women tend to look for men with wealth or power. if a similar test were done with women and they had to choose between a guy standing next to a nice car or a man that is wearing torn up clothes, they would most likely pick the guy with the nice car. These days’ women tend to be more comfortable with their bodies, which is a good thing, but it can be too revealing sometimes. Women wear the bikinis for the attention and because they want to look good, leading men to see the outside rather than the inside.

teen dating violence..

Even though people don’t like to talk about it, teen dating violence is a bigger issue than most think. The first thing that comes to mind when i hear someone being abused is a man hurting a women. Although physical abuse is serious it’s not the only type. There’s physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, mental, and financial abuse. This happens a lot more than you might imagine. According to datingviolence.org, 30 to 50 percent of female high school students reported to have experienced teen dating violence. It’s commonly believed that women are the only one’s getting abused, but with all these different types males and females can be abusive. There are many types of teen violence and for a lot it isn’t easy to recoginze or prevent these horrible things from happeneing.

Little Sister Starts Dating

by: Esteban Olague

Last September my little sister turned 13. As she gets older her feelings about boys are starting to change and evolve. A few months ago my little sister told my mom about this boy she talks to at school and eventually asked her if she could start dating, I can’t say I was completely blind sided by this action, but what really surprised me was when I heard that my mom actually allowed it. After all the years that I’ve been dating and hearing my mom talk about how I don’t know what I’m doing, or questioning if I can trust the girl. My favorite one though was when I’d start leaving the house to go out with my friends or my girlfriend, and right before I’d close the door she’d say “don’t do nothing I wouldn’t do”. I’d just turn my head and say ok because I knew that if I didn’t agree with her that she’d do anything and everything to keep me from going out. This was like a daily routine for her. Every day before I’d go anywhere these are the things she’d tell me. The annoying thing was that she ‘d never come up with anything new to tell me, just the same exact excuses to make sure that I would never make that one huge mistake with a girl; to get her pregnant at a young age. So hearing that it was ok for my young sister to have a boyfriend, completely shocked me. Especially since she’d get paranoid about her only son going out with girls. I thought it would be the other way around since mothers are generally more protective of their daughters than their sons. It also gets weird when she decides on telling me things about her boyfriend or about the things that they talk about. Most of the time i wish that she wouldn’t have ever told me anything, but in a way it feels good to know that she trusts me in telling me these things about her and her personal life. It also kind of helps that she tells me, so that if necessary i can protect her and give her advice. She makes me feel like the older brother she knows that’ll always have her back.

Prop 8

COMMENTARY

BY:NOAH TENNEY

ONE OF THE BALLOT INITIATIVES ON CALIFORNIA’S TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH BALLOT THAT RECEIVED A LOT OF ATTENTION WAS PROPOSITION 8, WHICH PASSED WITH 52.5% VOTING YES. AS A RESULT, THE CALIFORNIA STATE CONSITUTION WAS AMENDED TO DEFINE MARRIAGE AS A UNION BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN. THE INITIATIVE WAS PROPOSED AFTER THE CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT RULED BY A 4-3 VOTE IN MAY THAT THE EXISTING LAW BANNING GAY MARRIAGE WAS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. THIS TIME IT WAS PROPOSED AS A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO MAKE IT HARDER FOR THE JUDGES TO STRIKE DOWN. IT SHOULD HAVE LOST, BECAUSE IT BASICALLY PUTS DISCRIMINATION INTO THE STATE CONSTITUTION. IT TAKES AWAY THE RIGHTS OF GAYS AND LESBIANS AND TREATS THEM DIFFERENTLY UNDER THE LAW, MAKING IT, AS NO ON 8 PUT IT, “UNFAIR AND WRONG.” AFTER ALL, MARRIAGE IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT LOVE, NOT GENDER, BUT MANY PROPONENTS WERE MAKING MARRIAGE ABOUT GENDER BY IMPOSING THEIR RELIGIOUS VIEWS ON EVERYONE IN THE STATE. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HELPED TO MAKE YES ON 8 SUCCESSFUL WAS THAT IT RECEIVED HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY FROM OUT-OF-STATE RELIGIOUS GROUPS, NAMELY MORMONS, ALLOWING YES ON 8 TO AIR A LOT OF COMMERICALS. IN MANY OF THEM, PROPONENTS USED THE SCARE TACTIC OF CLAIMING THAT GAY MARRIAGE WOULD BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS IF THE PROPOSITION FAILED, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NOTHING IN STATE LAW OR THE PROPOSITION THAT SAID ANYTHING ABOUT TEACHING MARRIAGE IN SCHOOL. THEY ALSO CLAIMED THAT CHURCHES WOULD LOSE TAX EXEMPTION STATUS FOR REFUSING TO MARRY GAYS, ALTHOUGH STATE LAW AND THE PROPOSITION SAID NOTHING ABOU THAT, EITHER. GENERALLY ALL THE ADS SUGGESTED THAT “TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE” WAS BEING RESTORED, MAKING IT SOUND AS THOUGH GAY MARRIAGE HAD BEEN IMPOSED ON EVERYONE. IN NONE OF THE COMMERCIALS DID ANYONE GIVE LEGIT REASONS AS TO WHY GAY MARRIAGE OUGHT TO HAVE BEEN BANNED, BUT THE SCARE TACTICS WORKED. ANOTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTOR THAT PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN TO PROP 8’S SUCCESS WAS THE HIGH AFRICAN-AMERICAN TURNOUT IN SUPPORT OF BARACK OBAMA, DUE TO THE LARGE NUMBERS OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS ASSOCIATED WITH CHURCHES. IT’S RATHER UNFORTUNATE, SINCE NOT ONLY DID OBAMA OPPOSE PROP 8, BUT ALSO BECAUSE THEY ARE A GROUP THAT WAS DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BY LAW FOR A LONG TIME. ONE THING THAT REALLY STARTLED ME WAS THAT AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN SAN FRANCISCO BISHOP THOUGHT IT INSULTING TO COMPARE THE GAY MARRIAGE ISSUE TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, JUST BECAUSE SEXUAL ORIENTATION, UNLIKE RACE, IS A CHOICE. ANYWAY, NOW THAT THE BAN HAS PASSED, LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED, AND THE LEGAL BATTLE WILL BE LONG AND INTERESTING. MANY CONCERNS, INCLUDING EQUAL PROTECTION AND PRIVACY VIOLATIONS, CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTION OF GROUPS LIKE GAYS AND LESBIANS, AND CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AND REVISION BY SIMPLE MAJORITY, WILL COME UP. AS IT CURRENTLY STANDS, THE CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION CONTRACTS BOTH ITSELF AND THE U.S. CONSTITUTION.

Growing Pains

COMMENTARY

BY:YARELY MORENO

GROWING UP HAS NOT BEEN THAT EASY, ESPECIALLY BEING A PERSON OF COLOR. MY PARENTS LEFT THEIR MOTHER LAND JUST TO GIVE ME A BETTER LIFE. BUT I ALWAYS ASK MYSELF “WHAT EXACTLY IS THE BETTER LIFE?” THEY ALWAYS TELL ME WE WANT YOU TO HAVE A BETTER FUTURE, BETTER THAN THE ONE WE HAD. FOR EXAMPLE  WITH EDUCATION, THEY TELL ME YOU’R NOTHING WITH OUT IT, “IF YOU GO TO SCHOOL YOU’LL HAVE A CARREER AND MONEY, SOMETHING THAT WE DID NOT ACHIEVE. WE DON’T WANT YOU TO END UP LIKE US”. BUT SOMETIMES THE PRESSURE GETS TOO INTENSE. JUST TRYING TO DO WHAT OTHERS WANT ME TO DO. BUT SOMETIMES IT’S GOOD TO HAVE OTHER PEOPLE THERE TO PUSH ME BECAUSE IF IT WASN’T FOR THEM I DON’T KNOW WHERE I WOULD BE.  SCHOOL, FRIENDS, FAMILY AND GROWING UP IN GENERAL ALL OF THAT COMBINED MAKES A LOT OF STRESS FOR ME. I ALWAYS TRY TO STAY ON TOP AND GET GOOD GRADES BUT IT GETS TIRING AT TIMES. MY MOM IS ALWAYS LIKE “THAT IS YOUR ONLY RESPONSIBILITY!” BUT IT’S NOT TRUE THERE IS SO MUCH MORE GOING ON IN MY LIFE THAN JUST SCHOOL. FOR EXAMPLE, WITH MY FRIENDS, THERE IS A LOT OF UNNESSARY DRAMA AND IM JUST SO OVER IT NO ONE IS EVER HAPPY.  AND WHEN IT COMES TO MY FAMILY, IM JUST TIRED OF HAVING TO ALWAYS PLEASE THEM AND SOMETIMES THEY DON’T EVEN APPRECIATE WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. AND JUST ME REALIZING THAT IM GROWING UP IT MAKES ME A STRONGER PERSON, MAKING MISTAKES AND LEARNING FROM THEM. IT GETS HARD SOMETIMES BUT IT’S PART OF LIFE. HONESTLY I GUESS IT’S ALL PART OF THE “TEENAGE YEARS”. TEENAGE YEARS ARE HARD AND WE ALL GO TROUGH THEM AND WILL EXPERIENCE THEM. DON’T LET IT BRING YOU DOWN THEY SHOULD ONLY MAKE YOU STRONGER AND WISER SO AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU JUST HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO LET IT GO AND SMILE.
