High After The Dentist

Fernando Bustos

Commentary

One of the funniest videos that I’ve seen was this YouTube video about a young boy who had gone to the dentist. When he went to the dentist he had to inhale nitrous gas which caused him to get stoned. The boy’s father decided it was a funny idea to video tape his intoxicated son. The recording showed the boy tripping out, he was seeing things, screaming and it was just too funny to keep watching, but there I sat and continued to laugh. The boy said “is this real life?” That line was the funniest because it was as if he was in another world, it’s not everyday you see a 7 yr old in that way. “I feel funny, why is this happening to me?” David the boy said. It was weird to see a young boy say these words and the look on his face that he had no idea where he was. I might not know what it’s like to be high on nitrous, but I could see how the boy was lost and out of it by the many looks on his face. He was staring into oblivion saying that he only had two fingers, the young boy was stoned on gas and seeing things that he had never seen before. The video reminds me of how people I know react to comedy, people fall over, cry out loud and sometimes just go out of it. It is always good to have a laugh about random things, and serious things too. So go out there and watch a video or do something random.

I’ts unpredictable how young actors and actresses keep dying, everyone should have their right to live their life. Unfortunate stories like this reinforce that you don’t really know what you have until it’s gone

pills

By Fernando Bustos

Lexapro approved for teens March 20, 2009

Lexapro A depression drug has been approved for people in the ages between 12 and 17 years of old with major depression disorder. “2 million teens in the us have had mdd in the past year” the company forest says. The drug was made for adults with depression disorders with the need of a way to feel better. The drug was approved in august 2002 for adults, over some studies of treating teens and their depression there has been an evaluation of having the drug used by teenagers. The company forest laboratories had been filed by U.S justice department for inappropriately promoting antidepressant drugs like Lexapro for children. What really gets my attention of this drug is that it’s an antidepressant drug for people in the ages of 12 and 17. It’s sad to find out that they have to make drugs for teen in depression.

Elections

money and connections:the basis for a good political campaign

money and connections:the basis for a good political campaign

Margaret Daly

All my life, I have been very exposed to politics. My godfather is a former senator for the state of California, and my family has always helped him in his campaigns. I remember being introduced to “important” people at parties and fundraisers. Back then, I was always enthusiastic to help out. It made me feel important, but recent personal experiences have left me angry at the atrocities of campaigning for office. Some months ago my Dad ran for judge of Alameda County Superior Court. Unfortunately, he lost, but it was still a process that really taught me a lot. First of all, I learned that running a political campaign is a very stressful undertaking. I admire all politicians who are willing to go through that kind of stress for a job that will only bring more stress. Secondly, I discovered that I really hate politics. During the campaign my dad would come home stressed out and my parents began fighting a lot more. I would hear all about how the opponent had more money and more connections and how maybe it would be better to just give up. It seemed like qualifications didn’t matter. I thought an honest person with integrity and a good work ethic could easily prevail in an election but this isn’t so. There is actually so much more involved. In addition to this, politics really revealed who were just our “fair weathered friends.” During the campaign, some of my Dad’s lifelong friends in politics wouldn’t endorse him because they didn’t want to anger the support system of his opponent. These were people whom he had supported in all their endeavors. How could t hey turn their backs on him now? All of this got me thinking, this campaign must be a reflection of how all elections are. It makes me angry that a person who may be the best for a position could lose only because of their lack of connections or funds. This should not be acceptable; people should elect the best candidate. I want to reinforce and encourage people to really look into the candidate they are voting for, aside from just name recognition. For youth radio I’m Margaret Daly. 13 -year old Britain father Alfie Patten has impregnated 15-year old girlfriend Chantelle Steadman. She gave birth to a 7lb 3oz- girl named Maisie Roxanne. Patten said that he did not know how people would react to his situation but he wanted to have this baby anyway. According to the sun news, Alfie Patten said, “When my mom found out, I thought I was going to get in trouble. We wanted to have the baby but were worried how people would react.” While he is in a tough situation, he is determined to take care of this baby. “I didn’t know what it would be like to be a dad. I will be good though and care for it.” Patten said. Alfie is showing this world that being a father doesn’t mean to get a girl pregnant, but also own up to the situation and do what is right. Chantelle Steadman said Alfie has been really good with their new born child “Alfie has been really good with her. He made the first bottle and then we took it in turns feeding her. He did the first bit with me. We didn’t need any help from mum.” She said.

Both the father and the mother are going to stay in school, to ensure that the family has a great future. While teenage pregnancy is a big issue in today’s society, Alfie and Chantelle are working towards making sure that their child had the  best future ever.

Teen Pregnancy

Round Table

By Sarah Hamik

It’s normal in our society to have sex at a young age. It’s more likely that teens will have sex when their intoxicated because it causes them to be attracted to the opposite sex. When you’re under the influence teens tend to want sex more than care about their safety. According to womenshealthchannel.com, approximately one-third of young women in the United States become pregnant during their teens. More than 80% of teen pregnancies are unintended and unintentional. I think that teens should be more responsible about having sex and should always be prepared for the outcome if they were not prepared. A lot of my friends are usually only half ready when having sex and end up asking me two weeks later to buy them a pregnancy test. A lot of times pregnant girls can look to the media for suggestions about alternatives for their pregnancy. They could put it up for adoption like in the movie, Juno, or they could keep the baby like they did on the TV show called “Secret life of an American Teenager”, or they could have an abortion like Kyra from the movie “Coach Carter”. Even though teens have all these choices, it still shouldn’t lead them to get pregnant unintentionally.

WHAT IS FAMILY?

By Esteban Olague

Commentary

What is the real definition of family? Is family a word that can be defined from the dictionary? Is that the real definition just because it’s in a dictionary? My definition of family is a group of people that you trust with your life, a group of people that have your back till the end and not the ones that just say, “Yea blood, I got yo back.” Most people that just say it don’t really mean it. Through out my life I’ve learned that people aren’t justified by their words or promises, and not by their ability to speak or what people think of them. People are only justified by their actions and defined by what they do in the worst situations. I have family that I don’t consider to be my bloodline; I refer to those people by their first names instead of calling them my uncle, auntie, or grandparent. My real family has always been there for me. I’m the only son with only one little sister, but I got 6 brothers and 2 other sisters, 2 dads, 2 moms, and only a few aunties and uncles. My 2nd pair of parents are my dad’s brother and his wife. My brothers and sisters mostly consist of people who started out as just my friends, but I believe that family doesn’t end by blood.

Little Sister Starts Dating

by: Esteban Olague

Last September my little sister turned 13. As she gets older her feelings about boys are starting to change and evolve. A few months ago my little sister told my mom about this boy she talks to at school and eventually asked her if she could start dating, I can’t say I was completely blind sided by this action, but what really surprised me was when I heard that my mom actually allowed it. After all the years that I’ve been dating and hearing my mom talk about how I don’t know what I’m doing, or questioning if I can trust the girl. My favorite one though was when I’d start leaving the house to go out with my friends or my girlfriend, and right before I’d close the door she’d say “don’t do nothing I wouldn’t do”. I’d just turn my head and say ok because I knew that if I didn’t agree with her that she’d do anything and everything to keep me from going out. This was like a daily routine for her. Every day before I’d go anywhere these are the things she’d tell me. The annoying thing was that she ‘d never come up with anything new to tell me, just the same exact excuses to make sure that I would never make that one huge mistake with a girl; to get her pregnant at a young age. So hearing that it was ok for my young sister to have a boyfriend, completely shocked me. Especially since she’d get paranoid about her only son going out with girls. I thought it would be the other way around since mothers are generally more protective of their daughters than their sons. It also gets weird when she decides on telling me things about her boyfriend or about the things that they talk about. Most of the time i wish that she wouldn’t have ever told me anything, but in a way it feels good to know that she trusts me in telling me these things about her and her personal life. It also kind of helps that she tells me, so that if necessary i can protect her and give her advice. She makes me feel like the older brother she knows that’ll always have her back.
