Cuts in Education
During this time of great change in our every day life, I have noticed that in my school there are changes to come for the following years. The changes in the economy have hindered the possibility of future extra-curricular activities and other programs in our schools. Cuts in the school staff have also been a result of the recession, meaning that they have been giving out pink slips to many teachers. These changes have become an awful thought for teachers as well as me. I thought that it would have no effect on me, when teachers are being laid off, but now that I see what happen when there are fewer teachers to teach. This has become a concern for me, since it would affect my education and after school goals for the future. These major changes have affected everyone in their future goals for their education.

The NBA most valuable player candidates are Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Dwayne wade. I think Lebron James aka “the king” should be MVP.He averages 28.3 points, 9 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. Kobe Bryant averages 28 points per game, he also brings his team from the bottom to the top in most game, with the Lakers having the best record in the league. Chris Paul aka “cp3”, averages 21.4 points and 2.8 steals pre game. And Dwight Howard aka “d12”, also with an average of 21 points, and 2.9 blocks per game. And finally Dwayne wade who averages 29.7 points per game. My pick is Lebron James because he is unpredictable and very entertaining . He is a team player, and has a great personality, he loves where he’s at and keeps everyone on their toes. He is a nice guy and a player that a coach would want to work with .he is the future of the NBA.

Their junior starting point guard Raeshel Contreras has scored 418 points and shot 60 three point shots with 111 assists. Raeshel is considered to be the team’s mvp. 13 -year old Britain father Alfie Patten has impregnated 15-year old girlfriend Chantelle Steadman. She gave birth to a 7lb 3oz- girl named Maisie Roxanne. Patten said that he did not know how people would react to his situation but he wanted to have this baby anyway. According to the sun news, Alfie Patten said, “When my mom found out, I thought I was going to get in trouble. We wanted to have the baby but were worried how people would react.” While he is in a tough situation, he is determined to take care of this baby. “I didn’t know what it would be like to be a dad. I will be good though and care for it.” Patten said. Alfie is showing this world that being a father doesn’t mean to get a girl pregnant, but also own up to the situation and do what is right. Chantelle Steadman said Alfie has been really good with their new born child “Alfie has been really good with her. He made the first bottle and then we took it in turns feeding her. He did the first bit with me. We didn’t need any help from mum.” She said.
Both the father and the mother are going to stay in school, to ensure that the family has a great future. While teenage pregnancy is a big issue in today’s society, Alfie and Chantelle are working towards making sure that their child had the best future ever.

Today at youth radio we, the winter core class, were introduced to Cynthia Maxwell who works at Apple to create applications and specializes in sound development. During the presentation she mentioned that with every sound there’s a specific equation to make that tone. I’m only in the 11th grade and my favorite subject is math, but when she showed me what that equation looked like, I didn’t have a clue about what it meant. Luckily I was interested enough to ask if she could break it down and explain it to me after her presentation had ended. Another thing that she mentioned in the presentation was that she used to work for NASA, and for anyone that’s a pretty huge accomplishment. She inspired me to apply for mathematics in college, something I’d never even thought I would ever consider.

Cynthia Maxwell’s job is very interesting. At first I had no clue what she was talking about or what her work was about. As she started to explain more in detail about what exactly she does it made sense. It was weird and new but it was cool. Creating a software to make new sounds based on new shapes and what you can do with these shapes is out of this world. I was amazed when she took out her Iphone and started making sounds based on how she physically moved the phone. I highly respect her work and it’s something I will be looking more into.

commentary
Last week, in my California history class we had to take notes on a novel we read. The next day our teacher had us write the same notes from the day before. And every day after we had to write the same page of notes, over and over again. A few days ago we had to read a chapter from a text book. The chapter was just fact after fact. The pages were full of information strung together in the most boring, uninteresting way possible. Throwing facts at me does not help me learn. Reading facts without anything interesting to pull it all together makes the reading boring and not useful. Taking the same notes over and over is discouraging and makes you block out the useful information. Taking notes shouldn’t be just copying what is on the white board like machines. Text books are to factual and are only good for drumming information in your head without real understanding. They should be written for students of our age not for the people who majored in the subject. If they changed these things students would do better because they would actually know what they were saying not just repeating it like parrots. I believe that children can’t learn through the tedious and repetitive way that has been used and they should be taught more interactively. There should be more group activities, guest speakers, and more trips outside the school. Learning should be more interesting so you can grasp and understand everything.

By Miguel Ojeda
Isn’t senior year supposed to be the most fun and laid back year of high school? Ever since the first week of school all I’ve been doing is paying for senior year related things. People have always told me that senior year is going to be fun and easy, they tell me to make sure i have a good time. I’ve been trying to make that happen, but it’s also the most stressful time for most high school seniors. On top of that, there’s all this money that few students have, but need just to enjoy their senior year.
Hearing my classmates talking about not being able to buy a class ring or portraits because they don’t have enough money is depressing. I almost didn’t buy a year book because it cost $110. These are memories that i would have not been able to afford. worrying about saving my money so I have enough for winterball and prom is stressful. It maybe because of our countries recession that school events and senior year are so expensive.
Being a high school senior is hectic. And the added financial problems makes it overwhelming. I’ve already paid for senior portraits that cost over $200, just bought my cap and gown with the announcements costing about $150, and I still owe $450 for my class ring. Although this year has been somewhat fun it has mostly been financially rough. So far my senior year has taken money and potential fun from me. It isn’t exactly what i expected after hearing people talking about how enjoyable it’s supposed to be. I can say that it’s given me an experience of how the real world will be after i graduate. Hopefully I’ll be ready and leave high school without empty pockets.

ROUNDTABLE
BY: RAVEN ATKINS
GOALS HELP YOU STRIVE FOR WHAT YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE.WHEN YOU OVERCOME THEM YOU BECOME CLOSER TO WHAT YOU’RE STRIVING FOR, IN MY OPINION ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. LIFE GOALS DON’T NECESSARLY HAVE TO BE JUST ABOUT YOUR LIFES FUTURE ; YOU CAN HAVE WEEKLY, MONTHLY AND YEARLY GOALS TOO. BUT NONE OF THEM CAN BE ACHIEVED UNLESS YOU STRIVE FOR THEM. A FEW MOST COMMON GOALS FOR YOUTH ARE GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND GOING TO COLLEGE. BUT IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THEM YOU NEED STEPS AND ALONG THE WAY THERE WILL BE OBSTACLES. PERSONAL PROBLEMS AND STRESS CAN BECOME DISTRACTIONS IN THE WAY OF YOUR GOALS. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO MAKE SOMETHING LIKE MATERIAL THINGS, FOOD, OR ACESSORIES USING STEPS? GOALS ARE JUST LIKE THAT EXCEPT THERE ARE NO WRITTEN OR POSITIVE STEPS, ITS HOW YOU MAKE THOSE STEPS.HERE ARE SOME YOUTH WHO HAVE SOME OPINIONS ON THIS ISSUE. 16 YR OLD KHADEJHIA KASSENBACK, 16 YR OLD KWAME GRANT, AND 15 YR OLD LAREA PULLEY.WE’LL BE BACK AFTER THESE MESSAGES.
1. DO YOU THINK GOALS MAKE A BIG MEANING IN YOU LIFE IF SO
HOW?
2. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR LIFE GOALS?
3. DOES STRESS AND PERSONAL PROBLEMS COMPLICATE YOUR STRIVE FOR ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS?
4. DO YOU GUYS BELIEVE GOALS ARE SOMETIMES EASY TO ACCOMPLISH IF YOU HAVE THE SUPPORT OF YOUR FAMILY?
